What does a sewage pumping station do?
A sewage pumping station collects wastewater in a chamber and moves it through a discharge pipe when gravity drainage cannot reach the receiving sewer. A float or level control starts the pump as the liquid rises and stops it once the level falls.
How do I choose the right sewage pumping station size?
Chamber capacity is only one part of the choice. Consider the toilets and appliances connected, expected wastewater volume, vertical lift, discharge pipe length and pipe diameter. Compare our sewage pumping stations, then send Pump Station Direct your installation details so we can help check the proposed setup.
What is the difference between maximum lift and horizontal pumping distance?
Lift is the vertical height the pump must overcome. Horizontal distance is the length of the discharge route across the site. Pipe diameter, bends and friction also affect performance. The maximum figures are separate limits, not a promise that both can be achieved together; check the complete pipe route when selecting a pump.
Should I choose a single or twin pump station?
A single pump can suit a smaller installation, such as an extra bathroom or an outbuilding with a toilet. A twin system adds a second pump for resilience if one pump fails, making it worth considering for whole-house drainage. Duty, standby and alternating operation depend on the control arrangement. Two pumps do not provide backup electricity during a power cut.
Can the same station handle sewage, greywater and rainwater?
Sewage includes toilet waste; greywater comes from uses such as showers and sinks. Surface water, including rainfall, can create very different flow volumes. Check the selected station’s intended application and capacity before combining flows. Ask us to review the proposed connections rather than assuming every model is suitable.
Does a sewage pump run all the time?
Normally, level controls switch the pump on and off as wastewater enters the chamber. Continuous running or unusually frequent starts may indicate a fault or an unsuitable setup. Arrange a check if the operating pattern changes.
What happens during a power cut?
An electric sewage pump cannot operate without power. Wastewater may continue to collect, so minimise water use and seek advice if the level rises. Available storage depends on the installation and current liquid level. Battery backup in an alarm powers the warning system, not the sewage pump.
Do I need a high-level alarm?
A high-level alarm warns when the liquid reaches its set trigger level, giving you a chance to respond to a pump or drainage problem. It does not empty the chamber or guarantee that an overflow cannot occur. Explore our alarms and pump accessories and choose a suitable monitoring arrangement.
What should never be flushed into a sewage pumping station?
Keep wipes, nappies, sanitary products, cloths and other non-flushable items out of the system. Do not pour fats or oils into the drain. A solids-handling pump is not a waste disposal unit; use the toilet for human waste and suitable toilet paper only.
How often should a pumping station be serviced?
Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance and agree a service interval with an experienced engineer based on usage and site conditions. Checks can include the pump, level controls, valves, pipework, electrical connections and alarm. Regular inspection helps identify wear or developing faults before they interrupt drainage.
What should I do if the alarm sounds or the pump stops?
Reduce water use and contact a competent pump engineer. Tell them what the alarm indicates and whether the pump is running. Do not enter the chamber or attempt work on live electrical equipment. Contact Pump Station Direct on 0203 8851 996 or message us on WhatsApp.
Should a sewage pumping station smell?
Correct installation, ventilation and maintenance help control odours. A new or persistent smell can indicate a ventilation, sealing or operating problem and should be investigated. Do not block vents to hide the smell; arrange an inspection.
Can I install a pumping station myself?
Installation involves excavation, chamber support, pipe connections and electrical work. Use the instructions for the exact model and have suitable professionals assess the site, ground conditions and connections. Backfill, ventilation and cover loading must suit the installation; one generic method will not fit every station.
How do I choose compatible fittings and an access cover?
Match the pipe’s outside diameter, connection type and operating requirements to the fitting. Check the cover opening, frame and load rating for its location. Pipe size is not necessarily the required hole-cutting diameter. View our parts and accessories or ask us to check before ordering.
